Hello, all... I'd like to introduce myself for a moment if I could.
My name is Ken Hollis, and I've got my own software company called "Bitgate
Software". It's strictly public domain, so we're not selling anything in
the real market yet.
You may have heard my name in various places such as Telnet, IRC, or on
news. I have accumulated rights to Let 'em Fly from Oliver Scheel, and
am currently working on the program part time. (The other part is
talking on IRC!) I have been reading "keyboard-equivalent" proposals
and I agree and disagree on quite a number of things. I wanted to point
out some standards which should remain so in not only keyboard equivalents,
but also in Extended Object Types.
As you know or may not know, I have also published Gem Master Listing, which
contains indices to all known AES commands (whether made by another program
or not). If anyone wants a copy of the listing, they should write to me
and not to gem-list. Secondly, the Extended Object Type indices listed
will not be listed as numbers, but as information. :)
"My proposal on Keyboard Equivalents"
"=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-="
Standards should be used in creating keyboard equivalents when specifying
a standard function. But, as Geneva does, you should be able to freely
re-assign keyboard equivalents based on user preference. I have found
this type of idea very useful. Also, instead of saving the keyboard table
as a file, as DMJ noted, we should have it saved in the program itself,
and allow the user to bring up a setup screen at will.
Therefore, the standard keyboard equivalents that should remain untouched
are:
CTRL-U: Close the top window
CTRL-*: Full the top window
CTRL-W: Rotate/Push to bottom the current window
CTRL-UPARROW: Same as moving the slider up one unit
CTRL-DNARROW: Same as moving the slider down one unit
CTRL-SHIFT-UP: Same as paging up
CTRL-SHIFT-DN: Same as paging down
CTRL-LF,
CTRL-RT,
CTRL-SHIFT-LF,
CTRL-SHIFT-RT: Same as above but with left and right respectively.
ALT-TAB: Cascade windows/push to bottom
ALT-ESC: Close all open windows (or wind_new in TOS 1.4)
ALT-SPACE: Redraw all open windows
ALT-KPENTER: Redraw current window
ALT-/: Iconify current window
ALT-BACKSPACE: Close topped window
And, as a standard help screen, SHIFT-HELP should always be used as an
IMMEDIATE help screen.
"Extended Object Type proposals"
"=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-"
Some of you may agree with this idea, some of you may not. This idea is
based on using Olaf Meisiek's Extended Object Types as a standard (or those
used in InterFace RCS). Atari has already taken this into effect, and put
the idea of using these EObTs in their MultiTOS documentation. I propose
that these EObTs remain untouched, and that these EObTs remain as the
standard for object fixing. Any seconds?
I may upload my listing, but it depends on how many people will want the
listing posted. If I get all "YES" and no "NO" votes, I will post the
GEM Master Listing. If I get at least one "NO" vote, the listing will not
be posted. A final listing will be posted in one week from this time.
Thanks for letting myself be known. Anyone wanting questions about Let 'em
Fly's new project, or anyone wanting to join in on the project should write
me! I'd be more than happy to include some more "happy" faces in the
programming project.
